Email problems

I'm running CiviCRM on Drupal right now and I think I have this more or less figured out (huzzah!) in terms of how the program functions with Drupal on a basic level (i.e. coordinating Drupal users with CIviCRM contacts and such), but I am having a problem with automatic emails. My email server is working, as I can send emails to and from my default system admin email, but not to any other emails. I tried with my work email, with a friend's email and with an email I made up for testing purposes and none of those addresses was able to receive confirmation emails and such.
Sending form emails through the "Contacts" section is also not possible.
Any ideas what might be causing this?
