Setting custom fields

Hi,

Didn't get this done before hols so its on my when I get back list. Thought I'd post now so I can get it done ASAP when I'm back.

I want to set a custom field in a multiset. I know the # so I had hoped $params['custom_23-13'] or $params['custom_23_13'] might be acceptable to pass to the contact create API but it drops the bit after the 23. So, what's the best way to set a custom field value of multiple field type when you know the field #?

BTW - if you pass $params['custom_23'] to a civicrm_contact_create it adds another one to the multiple value set which is useful to know
