Link in notification mail for activity
July 14, 2011, 07:21:10 am
Hi all,
at the moment (depending on your settings) a notification mail is sent for an activity to each assignee. In this mail a link to edit the activity and a link to view the activity are included.

If you follow this link you either edit or view the activity, and at the top of the form you see the name of the contact that created the activity. So if I have a CiviCRM user (and contact) called John Doe, who creates an activity with contact Sarah Ant and assigns the activity to colleague Martin Lion....Martin gets a notification mail, with a link that will show him the activity with John Doe on top of the form (the cid in the url). This is not very useful, as IMO the most common case will be that I want to see the details of the contact I am supposed to do something with, in this case Sarah Ant.

I am creating this as a customization, but I also want to make a change to core and have discussed this with Kurund. He believes that in the link the name on top of the form should be the name of the assignee. I can see this makes sense, and from a technical point of view it is best....as I am not always sure I have targets with the activity, and I am always sure I have an assignee (or I would not send an email at all). Yet from a use case I can not see the sense. For example if I have an activity 'telephone call' it is most useful if I can quickly see the phone number of the person I am supposed to call, not my own phone number.

So a little poll: what do you think?

definitely target.contact (or empty if no target.contact is there.)

I think it would be really usefull to have this. It would have solved the problems at a housing estate last tuesday ;-) But we managed with a work around.

OK, I will raise it as a suggested improvement in the issue tracker, if it is not accepted there we can make an extension that enables this.
