Reason for storing CMS user table

Any thought as to why we store CMS user table & don't just use the drupal functionality - ie. why

i think this was primarily needed and used when we were not bootstrapping the CMS. Seems like most of our scripts now bootstrap the CMS, so the tableName field is getting close to obsolete
