Is there a setting for what email format 'send an email' uses - not civiMail
September 26, 2008, 03:36:52 am
HI - just getting familiar with the email templates for using 'send an email' off a contacts summary page. Two things are perplexing me and seem to work fine on the Demo site - but on our 2.0 set up

a/ even though i have put content in to both text and html boxes in a new email template, when I click on 'send an email' and choose the template, it only displays the text version in the box, and that is the version it sends.

The contact was not set to 'text' formatted emails.

Is this something to do with the smtp settings?

Also - even though the contact had their preferred location as home, the email was addressed to the persons 'billing' location email. Is that expected? This it not happening on the demo site. Is there some underlying default setting that means if someone has an email address in Billing then this gets used, even if it is not preferred?

Actually found the bug. It happens when you have same email address for multiple locations.

Filed issue for this: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3624

Thanx

Thanks Kurund but just need a bit of clarification. Is the bug you are referring to (and fixing) to do with it coming out as Text Only - or showing the wrong address (ie billing v home) ?? Thanks

We show text only when there only one email address. So since 2 of your location have same email address, there is a bug which show incorrect email address. So showing of wrong email address issue will be fixed.

We show text only when there only one email address.
So I am unclear why civiCRM defaults to using 'text' emails when we are sending to a single person. We want to be able to send a formatted email as a welcome with lots of checksum and contact tokens. Using text only really loses a lot of what we are trying to achieve.

There is definite confusion. I am not talking about email being send in "text" format. If there are two location have same email addresses, then we show just text in form instead of select. (http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3624)

I will try to better explain the other part of the problem, which was the first post in this thread.

If I use 'send an email' to an Individual Contact (ie from the Summary page) and I choose a template that is formatted HMTL, what I see (fig one) for a contact whose Preferred Email Format is BOTH is a text-only version of the template (fig 2). This is also what is sent.

I have tested on your 2.1 sandbox and no problems there. So this is an issue with our set up I presume.

I note that on another civiCRM install we have, this function is also not working correctly, but for different reasons I suspect (though they may be linked). I am getting a message such as the following, showing for both text and html.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">

  <style type="text/css" media="screen">@import url(http://livingstreets.giantrobot.co.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/css/civicrm.css);</style>

What's your CiviCRM version ?  Attached screen shots does not match "Send Email" form layout in 2.0 nor 2.1 ..

i don't suppose you have a 2.0 sandbox lying around so i could compare what is meant to happen with what we get?

Right, v2.0 public demo is not available. In v2.0 we don't support HTML messages in "Send Email".
