Server has PHP5 but MySQL4.1.22

My server stats are as follows:
Operating system Linux
Linux kernel version 2.6.27-grsec
Apache version 2.2.11 (Unix)
Perl version 5.8.8
PHP version 5
MySQL version 4.1.22
I know that the latest versions of CiviCRM say they require MySQL 5.x but for the time being it's not really an option.
Will CiviCRM 2.1 work or am I just setting myself up for a world of trouble?? We're not using any real elaborate features. We just need to track people that have contacted our organization in the past and maintain records on addresses, phone #s, emails, etc.
If CiviCRM2.1 isn't an option, what is the latest version that won't cause my world to fall apart?

In the long run you are better off with mysql 5.0.x
mysql has stopped support for mysql 4.x
We only support the latest version of CiviCRM (in this case 2.1).

I understand you can't provide guarantees and that the latest version is always best.
But to your knowledge will CiviCRM at least run on MySQL 4.1?? Is there anything specifically prohibiting it?

a large part of it might work on 4.1. dedupe and multi-lingual stuff will definitely not work. The installer will need to be hacked to allow an install on mysql 4.x

I don't suppose you can give a hint on what needs to be "hacked" or point me to something to get me started on my own?
