recurring contributions and Joomla mod_freepaypal

There is a big need for pledges with recurring payments. I have seen anubler of post but no clear or workable answers.
Reminder letters are ok but what is really needed is the ability to automatically collect on a scheduled basis and send a thank you letter when the payment is collected.
We started out taking pledges year ago on any basis and frequency that the donor wanted. Today we search a log on a weekly basis and then manually process the payments. We probablly fail to collect as much as 10% of the pledges every month because of lack of process and automation.
We set up civiCRM using Joomla CM. In Joomla there is a module called mod_freepaypal that allows for weekly, monthly and annual payments. Has anyone one used this?
Is there any work underway in civiCRM to add this type of capability?
PS: civicCRM is a GREAT Product!

We've implemented the functionality below as a recurring contribution rather than a pledge. You can set up a contribution page and enable recurring contributions if the payment processor is paypal standard and get the same effect as mod_freepaypal
there currently are no plans in the next release or two to link the two features. If important to you / your org please consider stepping up and sponsoring the feature and/or hiring a developer to do the needful

Is it still the case that PayPal Pro cannot be used to process recurring payments and that this must be a paypal standard account? Is the authorized.net connection also unable to process recurring payments at this time?
Thank you in advance for any information you can provide on this.
