View fields in profile

Are view only fields in profiles supposed to show up?

CiviCRM 3.1.3 Drupal 6.1.5

I've setup a profile template so contacts that are not users are able to update certain fields for their contact record that we have in the profile using a link in an email and I this is seems to be working using the contact profile update approach with checksum:
Quote
To send people to a profile use this path: |http://www.myorganization.org/civicrm/profile/edit?reset=1&gid=N&id={contact.contact_id}&{contact.checksum} where N is the ID of the Profile you want to send them to.
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Mail-merge+Tokens+for+Contact+Data

So far, so good, however, there are certain verification fields that let us know we are on the right record like internal contact id, first name and last name.  At this point, I don't want the contact to be able to change these fields, however, it would be nice to list them for the contact and for testers to see they are on the right contact record.    However, when I change the profile field to view, it does not seem to show up - the view fields also are not shown when in the profile, we click preview.   Is there a secret to using view fields in profiles?

Allowing contacts to be able to update their record from a link in an email is a great idea.

Thanks.

Dave - just confirming that yes, by setting the Profile Field to 'view' the data should then be exposed as 'view only' in the profile you send the person to, so you can say 'this is your name but no you can't modify it' - or as we do 'if you want to modify it please make a comment below'.

So not sure why you are not seeing the data. Are you seeing the data prepopulation for the editable fields but not the view only?

Maybe check permissions etc?

Let's see - checking the first name field for view_only,makes it disappear in both the linked from email update form and also in the profile preview.  Unchecking the box, makes it appear, but it is now editable.

Maybe this is a Profile Search form?  Not sure what that is and doesn't seem like much of a search because the contact_id is specified, but maybe?

View Only?

If checked, users can view but not edit this field.
NOTE: View Only fields can not be included in Profile Search forms.

Thanks, that would be consistent with what I'm observing.
