Automatic Membership When Registering For Event?

Is there any straightforward way to either combine the event and membership registration processes, or automatically make a user a member when they register for an event?

You can potentially accomplish this using a postProcess hook on the submit of the Event Confirmation form.

Thanks, that looks like a place to start.  The client won't be happy that it requires custom development, but if they do decide to move ahead with it I'll definitely share the code.
