export fields for CONTACTS (instead of just individual, household, organization)

If I'm exporting some data from a set a contacts containing a diversity of contact types, how can I achieve an export that, for example, puts all the email addresses into the same column? Currently I have to use three columns (one for individual, one for household, and one for organization). I would like for the "Select Record Type" drop down in step 3 of the export to include an option for "Contact" that will pull data from contacts regardless of type. With one column (such as an email address) this difficulty is manageable, but with several columns it borders on unusable. I understand that my organization can sponsor this feature, but I wonder if I'm just missing something here. Any help?
