Install: Error - Building database schema and setup files...
January 26, 2008, 05:34:10 pm
Newby posting.

Installed Drupal on remote host. No issues there.
Installing CiviCRM. Got all green when checking databases in initial install. Went ahead with installation and immediately received an error:

# Building database schema and setup files...
Cannot open mysql://username:password@localhost:/tmp/mysql5.sock/databasename_civicrm?new_link=true: DB Error: connect failed

I changed the pertinent details. Since all was green at the checking level I am assuming CiviCRM install was able to connect to the server. Odd that it not able to connect during the actual install.

I'd appreciate any comments!

What OS?

Are you positive about the /tmp/mysql5.sock path?

Sorry, I forgot my password AND submitted the wrong email address. Same person here, different username :-)

OS is RedHat

The socket path is correct; it is one of my host's idiosyncrasies. I have used this host for Joomla, Mambo installations, you name it. All worked.
The odd thing is that the installation check comes out OK. If I change anything then I get red flags. If I put in the correct info I get green all 'round, but the installation hangs on the next page. Perhaps the string length is too long?

I'd really like to try this out, since I have a potential customer who is interested in using this.

Does this error reflect the CIVICRM_DSN in your civicrm.settings.php exactly?

If so, I do not think you need/want the colon between localhost and /tmp.

So What was the final solution to fix this?

I've had the same problem, the solution for me was to use my hosts remote database connection settings.  If you don't know how to connect remotely just contact your host for assistance.
