How to use advanced search to locate intersection of two smart groups

I am trying to use the advanced search to locate contacts that are in "smart group A" AND in "smart group B".

Using advanced search, I select both of the smart groups and choose the search operator to be "AND". The result set that is returned is not correct. Whether I choose the operator to be AND or OR I get the same [incorrect] result. Both smart groups return the proper results on their own.

In fact, the query shows, "Contacts IN >smart group A or smart group B AND Group Status - "Added"".

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong, or alternate ways of achieving this?
