Install from directory fail (Joomla!/CiviCRM all versions) - Blank screen

Hi there

I am trying to install CiviCRM with Joomla! and I keep getting a blank screen after clicking install from directory.

I have previsouly installed CivicCRM 1.9 with Drupal 5.2 and it worked fine. However I much prefer the features of Joomla! and have chosen it as the CMS for our non profit org.

For context, my system setup is:

Windows XP Professional SP2
Apache 2.2.4
MySQL 5.0.37
PHP 5.2.1
Joomla! 1.0.12/Joomla! 1.5

This is part of Web Developer Suite 1.95. However I have manually created a database for Joomla 1.5 called Joomla15 and installed it using the web installer.

I have tried the following combinations/results from my attempts to install:

1./ Joomla! 1.0.12 with CiviCRM 1.9 (both IE6 and Firefox 2.0) First install returned "component installed successfully" page, and the component "CiviCRM" was available from the component menu. However when I clicked on any CiviCRM page link in the menu, a blank page was displayed. View source didnt show anything interesting, it was just a blank page. So I unistalled the component through Joomla! Admin interface and reinstalled a number of times (again using the Directory install feature). Any subsequent installations would result in a blank page being displayed, and the status "done" displayed in IE6 status bar.

2./ Joomla! 1.0.12 with CiviCRM 2.0 (both IE6 and Firefox). Same blank page issue. I press on install button after providing install directory. This (always) happens after about 20-30 secs.

3./ Joomla! 1.5 with CiviCRM 2.0 (IE6). Same blank page issue as previous attempts.

I have modified my php.ini file like so:

I am at a loss as to why this is happening and would be very grateful for any help given.

Are you able to install other components? Just to rule out any problems with the Joomla installation itself.
Can you determine if the CiviCRM installer has created the folders in the components and administrator/components folders?
Can you determine if the installer created any tables in the MySQL db? (all prefixed with civicrm_)
Does your local Apache install have error logs turned on? Anything revealing in those?

I would recommend trying to get 1.9 up and running before 2.0, since 2.0 is still in Alpha. There may be issues in the code that are confusing the issue (with installation).
