De-dup time out error

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /var/www/association.drupal.org/htdocs/sites/association.drupal.org/modules/civicrm/CRM/Utils/Type.php on line 117

This happened after I imported a duplicate set of 125 contacts into a group, where 75 of the contacts already existed.

I am running this in a tightly controlled environment and I'd like to not have to change the PHP settings if I can avoid it.  Anything else I can do?

To accept a limit in the Deduping, I've limited deduping to a particular group.

Just noting that in my experience this cannot be a Smart Group.
