Smarty Errors Driving Me Crazy

Hi,

I've been trying to get CiviCRM working on an ISP shared server environment. (RH 5)  Drupal works fine but whenever I try to administer Civi, I get the errors below - and lots of them. The ISP has been trying to chmod and chuser the appropriate directories but PHP keeps changing them back. I started with version 1.9 and tried the upgrade to 2.0. Managed to get through the upgrade but still get the errors below. The ISP is out of ideas. (I have this working fine on a dedicated host but when I uploaded to the ISP, I started to have the problem. I hope somebody has some good suggestions.

i suspect your host has either open basedir or safe mode enabled which messes up permissions. We dont know those settings well, so you might want to check the smmarty forums for workarounds

Hi,

I have the same problems with civiCRM 2 - that the chmod settings changes. Drupal has no problems when it creates tmp files with the same settings - nothing changes.

can  you check if your host has open_basedir or safe_mode turned on. if so, you might want to search the forums for how folks get around that issue

open_basedir is off
safe_mode is on

But this applies to Drupal too, but Drupal does not have the same problem. The problem is only occurring with civiCRM.

As a additional note to the chmod changes (777 to 755), the owner of the directory is also changed to httpd - thus I can't delete it.

The files created by civiCRM has chmod 600 and owner httpd - thus I can't delete them.

hmm... is there a target directory where the temp-files are moved to, cause I need to replace the directory with 777 chmod copy, before civiCRM can move them into the directory?

drupal does not use Smarty (and hence does not create temp files), while CiviCRM does

There is an issue with CiviCRM, Smarty and safe_mode. Your best bet is to talk to the Smarty folks on the Smarty forums and figure out what we need to do to enable Smarty to function in safe_mode. We'd be happy to integrate these changes in future releases of CiviCRM

One thing to check if you've used FTP to move files and folders: check that the filenames of the smarty files didn't get corrupted in the transfer. I had about four filenames corrupted (they ended with a string of numbers instead of the proper filename); when I renamed the files on the server, the smarty errors went away. I'm having other problems unrelated to this - perhaps this will help.
