civicrm installation on a cPanel managed server
June 10, 2008, 01:32:37 am
Hi - I was hoping someone could give me some guideance on installing civicrm standalone on a cpanel managed server?

Specifically some help on how to configure and connect to the mysql databases?

ie should I create a new database and user for civicrm within my cpanel admin area and then use these inthe user and database configuration page of the civicrm standalone installation page?

I have tried this and get errors that civicrm could not connect to the database I created.

Any help would be greatly received.

Thanks

with cPanel if you create a db called civicrm you may find that its actual name is prefixed with the cpanel account username like this: username_civicrm. The same goes for your username. Does this help?

Also make sure that your user has all permissions granted.

thanks for the reply, speleo. Yep - I've created my db in cpanel and enter correct names complete with the prefixes, and also added the db user to the db with all permissions. it seems from here the installer doesn't want to connect to the db, rather create a new one. any other suggestions?

servername = localhost

Can't really offer much more. Sounds like you are doing everything else good.

The standalone installation page is asking for your root account on your MySQL server because it wants to connect and create the database for you, create the user account and give it the right permissions, and then load up the database w/ all the initialization data. *It then promptly forgets your root database account and never uses it again.* :)

Let me know if it's too inflexible for you. I'll tweak it to better suit cPanel installations (I wrote it).

I am having the same difficulties.  I cannot get past the database setup.  I am also using cpanel

I have setup a user and gave all permissions.
The rest of the info on the setup form I left blank.

Something that might be helpful is if the install process just asked you were your db was and the username to connect.
