When to use the Forum vs StackExchange
April 08, 2015, 12:03:12 pm
Based on initial usage of http://civicrm.stackexchange.com
This forum is best for:
  • Beta testing feedback
  • General discussion
  • Vetting potential bugs
  • (edit)Planning and developer discussion (See: https://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=36985.0 )
  • feature requests
StackExchange is best for:
  • Questions about evaluating CiviCRM
  • Questions about using CiviCRM
  • Questions about troubleshooting CiviCRM
  • Basically anything that fits in a Question+Answer format

This leaves a bit of ambiguous grey area, with which I would suggest that, given the popularity of the new StackExchange site, that's the place to go when in doubt.

Maybe a sticky post on: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/board,5.0.html would help reinforce this? =]

Any thoughts about what can be done on S.E. that would provide info about CRM Version, CMS Type etc.?

I've started a discussion on CiviCRM meta SE site about this. http://meta.civicrm.stackexchange.com/questions/61/should-civicrm-version-and-cms-version-be-required-when-asking-a-question

I'm not sure that the site, as currently configured, is as easy to use as the current forum.

The current forum is broken down in categories.  Yes I see the use of tags in the new forum, but sometimes its much easier to find the category one wants.

For example, you have a tag for Joomla, is that Joomla installations, extensions, etc.

Tags are great, but using them with categories can make it easier.

SE doesn't allow you to create a new tag if you don't have enough credit -  I tried to add 'autocomplete' as a tag (which would be completely valid for Civi) but I wasn't permitted.  Doh, stupid.

@nzampella & @clarkac:

These sound like fairly minor growing pains of a new StackExchange site. The site is so new that all the necessary tags are not there yet, and there isn't quite enough content to see how it's all organized.
Also you are such new users that you don't have the rep to help out yet.

I think a little bit more time will sort this out.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.

Thanks - I'll look again at stack exchange - didn't really see an opportunity for discussion, but I'll look again.

Here is the item I'm chasing now
https://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=37099.0

Is there an area on stackexchange were we could discuss the functionality of suffixes?

= = = = = = =
I guess I shouldn't complain unless I try - posted here:

I have a problem/bug to report. How does https://issues.civicrm.org/jira/secure/Dashboard.jspa fit into this picture?  Should be using Stack Exchange now?
