"State / Province" (UK) contains towns/cities/regions and breaks gmap.

Is there something I can do to fix this and feed it back to wider community? I am working on an installation mapping projects in the North West of England. I want to be able to map groups by area so have using the dropdown for "State / Province", it shows only locations in the UK but shows everything from small towns, to cities to regions. I thought I could get over this by selecting 'Greater Manchester' for all in that area as town and city is already dealt with in seperate named fields, however I find that most of the time when I save latitude/longitude info, this is not saved with the "State / Province" selected, but will save fine when this field is not filled.
Is there a way to remove all this spurious information and use only UK regions or counties in this field, I'm happy to do some work on this if someone can point me in the right direction. I'm sure it would be useful to others as well.
Many thanks,
Matt

I know this topic is a bit cold, but I just wanted to add my experience.

I noticed that the locations given by "Map this Address" were off; generally in the same town, but not the right place.

When I removed the data from the County (State/Province ?) field, the mapping worked perfectly.

I haven't really looked at how CiviCRM does its geolocation.

I have been surprised at the ISO standard "county" data that is used by CiviCRM. There was a discussion about it at the London dev camp.

I think the Post Office standard of Post Towns is probably the way to go, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_town, but I have no idea how to make it happen!
