joomla menu manager broke after I updated joomla - a dirty fix

I have 2 databases, one for civicrm and one for joomla. I did this because I never wanted to have to update civicrm again from localhost to live server and have to reconfigure it over and over until I got it right. 

So I updated the joomla side locally and uploaded that .sql. Now I broke my site menu manager on the back-end and cannot get the drop-downs to work for the contribution page choices. And this broke my front end menu.

I read a lot of other posts like this with no real answers.

What I ended up doing was creating url links instead for the menu options to this:

index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contribute/transact&reset=1&id=3
the id=# is my contribution page id #.

Think this will break anything else?

Is there a better fix I do not know about?

I've made some inquiries on this problem - not sure why it's not yet been posted on the issue tracker, since it's also broken on our own joomla demo (I think we're not quite sure how to fix :-( ).

In any case, using URL links is the best workaround that I know about.
