Just started a rebuild and re read docs.
I did a sync of Joomla users and bingo - urls working as expected without administrator. :)
One of the Joomla admins accounts was problematic 2 days ago - password was not recognised even though no changes had ocurred -  and we had to recreate the password to obtain access.

I have no explanation for this as I cant profess to know what has happened.

I will reconfigure events and see what more troube i can find.
