For each person that can send out CiviCRM emails there a forwarding address has been setup that forwards back to them.  Currently, even with the VERP override the forwarders go to the catchall mailbox where we pretty much ignore them.  This may be best for large mailing groups, but it would be nice for smaller mailings to be able to have the option to forward bounces back to the person who sent them.  Only a very limited number of people ever look at the bounced mailbox.  We do not process bounces.   If there is an issue with the return mail path to not be labeled as a spammer, that would be important.

We are starting to do more with the more action - "send email to contacts", but that bypasses some of the CiviMail features.

Hi,

Why don't you process the bounces ?

And to answer the bounce question: having an invalid email address is a good way of being identified as a spammer, as is sending repeatedly emails to invalid addresses.

Bottom line: you need to process bounces. CiviMail automatically or manually. If you want it automatically, go civimail, if you want it manually, send an email is the option available.

I agree that we should process bounces, but we don't except for some manual work.  Gave up getting the PERL to work and we are not yet on the later versions to try the PHP approach.   That's why it would be nice for smaller mailings to have the people handle the bounces.   Handling bounces does not just involve flagging as do not mail, but calling the person or asking others that might know the bouncee what there email address is.  Also, sometimes the problem with the email address is obvious when we look at it.

It has been moved to the previous step, and renamed to something clearer "Track Replies?" (that was what VERP was doing anyway).

Now by default it's unchecked, but you could change that in civicrm.settings.php

ahh...
I noticed that first screen was reconstructed, but didn't think that it might control the VERP override as well.
