Update-

no matter what Is eem to do- change the dedupe, change profiles, etc I am still getting overwritten values coupled with already exists errors.  I assume the already exists errors are coming form the fact that it somehow thinks there are duplicate matches in the db.

Perhaps I need to hire a professional?  Any recommendations?  This is way out my league I believe, I dont where to even begin to look to try to debug past what i have mentioned above.  Can you give me any suggestions that i might try before seeking to hire someone?  Also, if i do hire, any suggestions there?

I need to fix this soon for obvious reasons, thanks once again for everyone's help so far, much appreciated

If you're actually still running CiviCRM 3.3 and you're comfortable doing an upgrade - you could try upgrading to latest stable version (3.4.6 should be available early next week or you can grab 3.4.5 now) - and see if that helps. Otherwise, check the Professional Services pages (link in header above).

Thanks Dave.  Do you think that an upgrade has a fair chance of fixing the issue?  I know that's kind of like asking a person to fix a car over the phone, but perhaps you have heard of similar cases.  I have posted in the professional services forum as well asking for some help, but no one has replied in a week.  Do you have any recommendations of who i could contact?  I really appreciate everything you have answered so far,
thanks!

Question-

Does the fuzzy dedupe that is used for new contact/drupal user creation only run for new contacts at the time of new registration?  Or is it used for existing as well?  My case is this- we do not have the problem with folks who are renewing. If only for new contacts at time of registration, my idea is this- perhaps we can disable the profile/contribution from the registration and just offer standard Drupal user registration form.  Once the new Drupal account is created and the user logs in, they can then fill in their profile details and make the membership contribution.  Do you think this has a chance of working, or is it essentially the same thing, jsut one more step?  Hope this makes sense, all the best thanks

Sorry - no idea if an upgrade will help. Have not seen similar issue (i.e. no discernable errors).

The default "Strict" dedupe is the one that is used for front-end form submissions by anonymous users (profile in register form, online membership signup and renewal, etc.). If the user is logged in, then we know what contact to update / attach memberships and contributions to so we don't need to run a rule to match to a contact.

Excellent- thanks for your help.  FWIW this did solve my problem.  Anonymous users now jsut register using the Drupal form.  Then once logged in we direct them to the contribution page.

Thanks!
