We often need to register speakers, trainers, special guests, and other comped participants for paid events, and I'm wondering if any thought has been given to adding a field for Participant Roles to specify that they are exempt from the Participant Fees.

I did see this workaround: http://civicrm.org/node/566 for using coupons in a similar thread, but just wanted to float the idea to improve usability and enable users who aren't developers to comp people's registration fees.

You could do this using a hook. There are 2 ways that suggest themselves to me

1) expose role as a field, insert some Jquery (via pre_form_hook) in to change pricing options when a role is selected
2) append role to the URL - use civitest_civicrm_buildAmount hook to adjust amount depending on role
