State name - not abbreviation - on export
October 15, 2007, 08:35:15 am
I've been exporting a list of members whose expiry date is up, but have had to resort to the workaround of producing an excel vbs script to search and replace all the UK county codes with county names.

Is there an option in the program to do this that I might have overlooked? Otherwise, I guess I'll take it to the feature request forum.

Excel macro attached if anyone else has come up against this.

You can specify state_province (abbreviation) vs state_province_name in the Mailing Label and Address Display settings - but you can not currently do this in Export. BTW - your post is a bit confusing because the post title specifies "State name..." while your details reference "County" - which is a different field in the CiviCRM.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the response. I'm aware of the Mailing Label settings, but we're sending out letters to people using mail merge - and using the exported addresses in windowed envelopes - so the full state name is necessary. I should imagine that not all countries use the same abbreviation system as the US.
Sorry about the confusion re state/county - I'm using the state field for county - the area division system in the UK. I'm beginning to regret it after an epic import. I had to go through 7000 or so addresses to make sure that the field was correctly entered as the field wouldn't import without being on the list.
Thanks for the help anyway.
James.

Re: State name - not abbreviation - on export

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but I am having the exact same issue in v3.0.2.
We need to export over 1000 contacts to send to a mailing company and the UK localised version of civiCRM exports the abbreviated county (state in DB terms).
Is there any way to get the search results export to provide full state names? Seems a pretty crucial feature for non-US countries to me? It seems to be linked to the search result listing, which also uses the abbreviated names. Is there any way to modify the search results listings, as I suspect it is what drives the export?

I could probably do this with civireport, but I need admin and remote staff to be able to do this and at the moment they know how to use the export feature via a search, but don't have access or knowledge to use the report system.

Just a quick bump on this one after encountering the same problem.

Graham has it pretty much spot on.  The UK localisation has our counties as states which is why we are all using the state field. Not an issue in itself as they are the same thing from a database perspective. Ignore our local naming convention.

We don't use the CiviCRM state abbreviations though in the UK, so for mail merging we need the full state name in exports. The macro in the first post is a good work-around though.  :)
