Re: Sendmail or PEAR error with 3.1.4 and 3.1.5 (worked fine in 3.1.3)

I spoke to the host again.   They are two different servers, the technician claimed that the problem is that the software is trying to send from a non existent mail box.   I pressed him on why then it works on my test site, and he said the security must not be set up properly on that server and when they fix that it will stop working there as well.

Here is the mail log record (with my information replaced with bogus domain names).

2010-07-13 13:27:03 H=box590.bluehost.com (www.mydomain.org) [66.147.242.xxx] F=<b.247.6653.dadfc6fe3f7a89c4@mydomain.org>  rejected RCPT <test@gmail.com>: Sender verify failed

Note that I have checked override VERP, so shouldn't the from address be just my from address, not these special characters?

Also strangely, on the working test site, the mail log looks similar, with the non existent email box, but the email I receive has the expected from address.  I don't know enough about mail to understand how that's even possible.  But somehow the from address on the mail server log looks like b.247.6653.dadfc6fe3f7a89c4@mydomain.org, while both the from and reply to address in the email I receive look like info@mydomain.org.

Any suggestions about what to do next?   Is this expected behavior with override VERP checked, or is the override VERP feature is not working properly??

Hi,

It's normal, you need to configure the bounce mailbox. The override verp was a badly named checkbox, and only applies to the replies, not the bounce (the naming has been fixed on 3.2).

Xavier - Thank you so much for your continued help.  I'm still quite confused.

(1) My host tells me that the problem is the outgoing email address does not exist.   How will configuring the bounce email box address this issue?

(2) I had not configured the bounce mailbox for 2.2 and this problem has only occurred since I upgraded to 3.15.  Is this a new requirement of 3.15 that this must be done?   In 2.2 I simply received bounces in my default email account and handled them manually.  Our list is small enough that this is manageable.  (Although not ideal, so I'm certainly not opposed to setting up the bounce features if that will resolve this problem.)

(3) I tried to configure the bounce email box as you suggested, my host doesn't allow catchall or sub addressing, so I created a gmail account to receive the bounces.  However, I'm uncertain how to set up the settings for this new gmail account.

(4) Is  there any way to tell CiviMail to use my default email address as the from email address?  That would not solve the bounce problem, but I'm willing to handle that manually for now, and it would resolve my inability to send bulk email which is my immediate issue right now.

Thanks again for your continued assistance.

Can anyone else help here?  Right now I'm left with the impression that by upgrading from 2.2 to 3.15 I have made it impossible to use CiviMail on Bluehost.  I'm hoping that isn't right.  If it is, then it should be made very clear somewhere in the upgrade instructions.

You should properly configure your bounce handling. Read the book, as described, you can create a gmail account to handle it.

Sometimes between 2.2 & 3.1.5, we fixed a bug in sendmail that wasn't properly handling the bounce mailbox. Now it does, and it has revealed the error in your config.

Configure the mailbox in civicrm and the problem will be solved.

Thank you so much for all your help.   Configured the bounce mailbox and viola!  I can send emails.

Might I suggest that a sentence be added to the book, perhaps at the bottom of the "Configuring Outbound Email" section, something like ...

"In addition, you will need to configure the return channel to manage bounces as described later in this page.  Starting with 3.1.5, CiviCRM will not properly send emails on some hosts unless as return channel has been configured".

I'd be happy to make the change myself, but being such a novice at this I didn't want to modify without checking in.

Also FYI -  part of my confusion on this was that my two other sites, running 3.1.1 and 3.1.4 are both functioning fine.  That must be 'cause the change was made in 3.1.5.
