Given that there seem to be alternate web-service solutions that provide more accuracy (at least for specific locales), I'm wondering if it makes sense to include the ability to specify an alternate geocode lookup method as part of this project (via hook, config file or admin ui)??
Actually, I think there is still an argument for a "use override Lat/Long" checkbox -- when even an accurately mapped postal address doesn't provide the best or most useful location information.  We've had this crop up a couple of times for event addresses.  Side streets, rear-entrances, a particular corner of a park, etc.  Providing a map with the real location vs the location of the mail box could be helpful.

kmarkley are you able to chip in towards this? erica sounds like she may be able to put a few hundred to it - maybe we can scrape together enough to get the bare minimum of this delivered

I am very sorry, but I don't think I can.  We are saving our pennies in order to sponsor some event UI improvements in Q4 this year.  This mapping feature would be a pleasant improvement, but the events stuff is our bread and butter and a major pain point.  I just have to prioritize.

Totally understand - and expect our client may be in the same situation since 20 hours is a big cost for what seems to be a relatively trivial improvement. Just seemed that with the parties expressing interest we might actually have the potential to get this sorted.

in general anything that affects the core fields and a few different workflows turns out not to be very trivial in the end (believe me, we've fallen into the same trap a few too many times to count

I hear you Lobo, I hear you ;-)

And knowing such things aren't necessarily trivial is causing me to also err on the cautious side when suggesting that such changes 'could' be done to improve client's experience.
