So, your suggestion sounds like it will have the right outcome - I'm guessing it may be fairly easy to implement?

WRT the new feature. My original thought (a long time ago) about that was a profile API that would allow you to use the REST URL to retrieve whatever you can retrieve via a search profile. I did log something that worked for me in JIRA but it was a long time ago and the code may be out of date now and I didn't submit a test so it didn't get anywhere. However, I think the concept is still a valid answer to the conversation we are having.

I would actually be inclined to make the default to use permissions for all calls as I think that is the more logical behaviour but that would cause more impact on existing code which doesn't seem like a good idea. However, it could be the 'version=3' behaviour.

You can only filter on groups when you use profile. I tend to (ab)use the search filtering options with mixes of tags, groups, countries, subtypes, relationships and custom fields.

I'll check if I can find an existing project and make it more generic.
