I suspect we'll tackle this is a Make It Happen for v4.1.

v3.4/v4.0 is heading towards a code freeze date and no new feature adds :)

At the moment we use a proprietary CRM linked to a proprietary e-marketing system (although we are not 'marketing' as such, just sending info or requests for help to various groups within our Association.)

My knowledge of civiMail is limited, so this could already be possible, but the feature we think we will miss most if we switch to civiCRM and so start using civiMail is:

"Send to this group, except for those who have already been sent this email" - very useful for sending 'Help' requests to just the new members of a group, say two weeks after they have joined.

If it's not already been mentioned, two things that would be nice (and maybe not hard?) would be:

1. Ability to force the sending of mailings from within CiviCRM via a button, rather than having to rely on cron or forcing a send by opening a URL in a browser.
1A. Really clear help text when pressing "Send Now" that actually it means no such thing, if that's not already there.

2. Ability to have CiviMail use different email settings to CiviCRM generally e.g. membership sign-up receipts can go via mail() but bulk mails via CiviMail can go via SMTP (and thereby not annoy our ISP who assume website scripts doing bulk mailings are spam bots put there by hackers, ho hum).

Hi,

I'd rather NOT let the user send the email directly, that's what the cronjob is made for ;)

Could you provide the text that would explain clearer the send now ?

2) Not sure I see the benefit of sending the "normal" emails via mail() if you do the civimails in smtp().

(and beside for the support, that's already complicated enough when you have 4 options of outbound, don't want to multiply that by 2 ;)

This actually makes sense, we run into some problem sometimes. It has to do with use cases. Specifically 2:

1. Bulk mailing (using civimail)
2. Individual emails.

For the second category such as user confirmation email, contribution receipts, etc etc should be separate out because if bulk mailing SMTP is sending it can make the individual email "stuck" in the queue. Also the spam deliverability issue you have mentioned.

The solution could be having 2 mailing configuration set up in the backend, and if the second one is not set it will defaults to using bulk mailing option to do everything.

Cheers!
