Hi

I am trying to run CiviCRM  and I keep getting the following error when I click in CiviCRM in the components list to access it:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 35 bytes) in /hermes/bosweb/web158/b1582/d5.wesman/public_html/gracechristianchurch/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/packages/PEAR.php on line 884

I read the forums and tried to increase my memory limit but even at 128M it still gives this error. This is a clean install which from what I can tell went smoothly. I'm am running is on Dot5 Hosting.

Can anyone help me please?

The only suggestion I can make is to try to increase that limit even more. Seems clear that that's the problem. Perhaps on a different machine it would work better, but with your current host, that appears to be the issue.

it's also possible that your host is not allowing you to set the memory_limit value. in joomla, go to help > system info > php information and confirm whether your memory_limit setting has taken effect. if not, contact your host to find out if they allow you set it locally, and what method they support (htaccess or php.ini)

Wow, thanks for the help. I have checked the php memory in Joomla and it does say 128M. Before I try increase it more I just want to check if it's normal to need that high of a setting for php or could there possibly be another problem causing this? Before this my setting never needed to go above 16M.

civicrm requires more resources than most joomla extensions. 16M default is pretty low -- so you should definitely expect it to require more than that.

it should run fine using 128M unless you have a lot of records and are running more of the resource intensive tools. so it's definitely possible that something else is going on. you may want to get into error logs and see if they reveal any more specifics

Thanks. I actually increased it to 500M just to see if it would work even if it was a crazy high value and it still gave the same error so there is definitely another problem at hand. I'm quite new to joomla (this is my 1st time using it) and CiviCRM but I'm really excited to start working with CiviCRM as it looks amazing.

If anyone can help me try and find the problem here I would very much appreciate it?

try reinstalling. it won't hurt to reinstall directly on top of the existing installation.
also, in the joomla help > site page, check your directory permissions and make sure they are all green. it's possible the component was not fully installed.

Hi, thanks for all the help.

I contacted my hosting service and they informed me that they maximum memory limit allow is 64M so it seems that is the problem. Is there perhaps an older version I can try that requires less resources?

I don't think older versions require less and anyhow using an older version is not recommended for more than one reason, one being some have security issues.

The recommendation would be to find a host that can handle CiviCRM.
