Beta1 install failed

Installing new testbed of  Drupal 7.0 + CiviCRM 4.0b1. Drupal works great, but CiviCRM fails with "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request."

I found the following in the apache error log:

[Mon Mar 28 05:51:34 2011] [error] [client 192.168.1.12] PHP Notice:  Use of undefined constant DRUPAL_ROOT - assumed 'DRUPAL_ROOT' in /var/www/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Website.php on line 56

I've encountered the same error with installs of Drupal 7 and CiviCRM 4.0 beta2 as well as beta3. If this is a configuration error, following the instructions posted will not help. It looks more like CiviCRM not handling some environments as well as others.

My environment is MAMP 1.9.5 on OSX 10.6.7, PHP 5.3.5, MySQL 5.5.9. I performed a clean install of Drupal and CiviCRM each time and wiped the databases. Drupal works fine, but I receive the following error whenever I access a CiviCRM page:

[12-Apr-2011 23:49:24] PHP Notice:  Use of undefined constant DRUPAL_ROOT - assumed 'DRUPAL_ROOT' in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Website.php on line 56
[12-Apr-2011 23:49:24] PHP Warning:  require_once(DRUPAL_ROOT/includes/errors.inc) [<a href='function.require-once'>function.require-once</a>]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Website.php on line 56
[12-Apr-2011 23:49:25] PHP Fatal error:  require_once() [<a href='function.require'>function.require</a>]: Failed opening required 'DRUPAL_ROOT/includes/errors.inc' (include_path='/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm/drupal/modules/civicrm_engage/:.:/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm:/Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm/packages:.:/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5.3/lib/php') in /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/sites/all/modules/civicrm/CRM/Core/BAO/Website.php on line 56

DRUPAL_ROOT should be resolving to /Applications/MAMP/htdocs

Forum and google searches turn up nothing on this error or include path errors in general. Also the lack of a stacktrace option makes it difficult to debug these issues. Line 56 in BAO/Website.php is calling a constructor in DAO/Website.php and so on. There is no file in the CiviCRM module directory or the settings.php that defines DRUPAL_ROOT, so I'm assuming it is derived somewhere during bootstrap.

Someone with some experience needs to look at this as the available information is of no use in resolving this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Beta1 install failed (also the 4.0 full release)

I am having the exact same problem as Curt with the full 4.0 release that came out on 4/20/2011.  I'm able to install D7/CiviCRM 4.0 just fine on Ubuntu running PHP 5.3.3.  Is this isolated to MAMP?  Anyone else see this problem on other environments?

is it the exact same error INCLUDING line number? there is no mention of DRUPAL_ROOT in that file.

Also do u have an error handler page which is potentially throwing that error?

Correct, the same including line number.  Here is what I am seeing in my error log:

Turning off XCache (MAMP > Preferences > PHP > Cache) seems to have fixed the issue for me.

Turning off XCache work for me as well.  In fact, each of the other Cache options work.
