You were right, of course.  Trying to do it in the defaults doesn't work as I suspect that the autocomplete is clobbering the value anyway.  This is probably an issue for any autocomplete field if trying to setup defaults do you think?  I might try it in the override just for my own understanding as you suggested, but client got told *ages* ago now that I couldn't do it :)

That's a great idea, for the moment I've just used a validation rule to make the field required, but I think I'll change it to your idea as it suits their process a bit more.  Thanks for that.
