Thanks speleo, i added the syntax to .htaccess

php_value memory_limit 64M
php_value max_execution_time 600

and it works.

Henry - Would be great if you could add this info to the trouble-shooting tip in the Joomla install instructions (and maybe a note about when you'd use it this approach rather than php.ini):

This is an old thread, but I wanted to say thanks to Brian for posting the solution to copying the php.ini files to all the folders on a site. I had been hitting dead ends with each solution we'd tried for the php memory issue, and that script was the key!
