Install problem with Joomla 1.7.0
August 12, 2011, 09:00:22 am
Hello.
I'm running Fedora 13 on a VM (4 core / 2 GB RAM).
mysql 5.1.56
php 5.3.6
apache 2.2.17
selinux disabled

I installed Joomla into /opt/joomla without any sample data.
created symbolic link in /var/www/html/joomla -> /opt/joomla

Followed install procedure to install civiCRM as a component; system reported success.

From Joomla, I click on Components->civiCRM.  This takes me to a "civiCRM home page".
On this "home page", there is no menu bar across the top.  All it has is an icon of a box and says "civiCRM".  There is a menu bar on the left side that says

Create New
    Individual
    - Student
    - Parent
    - Staff
    Household
    Organization
    - Team
    - Sponsor
    Activity
    Event Registration
    Contribution
    Membership
    Pledge
    Email
    Group
    Tag

The body of the CiviCRM Home page reads thus:
CiviCRM
CiviCRM Home
Configure Your Dashboard
Refresh Dashboard Data
Welcome to your Home Dashboard
Your dashboard provides a one-screen view of the data that's most important to you. Graphical or tabular data is pulled from the reports you select, and is displayed in 'dashlets' (sections of the dashboard).

Javascript must be enabled in your browser in order to use the dashboard features.
Access Keys:

Powered by CiviCRM 4.0.5. CiviCRM is openly available under the GNU Affero General Public License (GNU AGPL).
Download source.     View issues and report bugs.     Online documentation.

When I mouse over "configure your dashboard", the URL line on Firefox shows "javascript::AddDashlet();", but clicking on it doesn't do anything at all.

I've gone to the demo site, and the menu bar across the top (with a button for "Administer") that is present on the demo site isn't there at all on my site.

Browsing with:  Firefox 5.0, IE 8, Safari all yield the same results.

Not sure if this is a joomla issue (as in, either something wrong with the install, or I need to activate something in Joomla), or if this is a civiCRM bug.  Might also be that there's some sample / demo data that I should load.

I've been through the installation document with a fine-tooth comb, and I've looked through many of the postings, but it doesn't appear that anyone else has run into this problem.

I found a posting referring to "load mysql" and so I manually loaded the civicrm-sample.sql file into the database with no apparent effect.

Thanks for all of your help -- this looks like a really nice piece of software and I'm very interested in getting it up and running.

I loaded Joomla 1.6.1 and things seem to be working.

From what I can understand right now, there's some compatibility issue with Joomla 1.7.0, javascript, and maybe my browsers.  Something's not getting interpreted correctly.  The menu is being shown all at once instead of being a pull-down.

On Joomla (1.5, 1.6 and 1.7) you can end up with a really stuffed up page if the path for Joomla and/or Civi CRM is incorrectly set in either or both of the civicrm.settings.php files (in components/com_civicrm and administrator/components/com_civicrm) - go and ensure they're absolutely right and then clear the data in the civi.domain table in the database and the templates_c directory and (one of those) may fix it. I've had this before and it drives me mad each time and then goes away if I fiddle with enough things.

PS CiviCRM isn't supported on J1.7, but works absolutely fine in almost every respect.

Hi,

Has any work been done on resolving this incompatibility with J 1.7? It sill does not display the admin menu for CiviCRm, in 1.7.x and 2.5.x. 1.6.x is now at end of life, as will be 1.7.x soon. And all versions of Joomla prior to 1.7.4 had a security issue.

Please advise,
HeronGrace.

Civi 4.1 will support J1.8 (and appears to work fine with J2.5). It's on its third beta now so will come as a stable release fairly soon.

Not sure that the current incompatibility with J1.7 is quite as bad as you make out, either - the problem I was describing is bad config on set up,  not a problem with Civi/Joomla....

Whatever this issue is, I have seen it with C408/J2.5, C41B3/J25, and now C41/J175.  However it's labelled, it's discouraging to not get a clean install.  I am trying to help out by debugging my own installs.  I'll try the suggestions made above, and report back.

I have joomla 2.5 and civicrm 4.1 and a clean install.  all was working fine.  then installed gcalendar extension and civicrm stopped working with error message above.  uninstalled gcalendar and all ok again.  so... you might want to try removing any other extensions you've got.
