Hi,

Yes, we have got a version of this almost ready to go into production. I'm going to have to add a bit more later with some of the links & bits & pieces - but in 4.2 you can receipt (back office) a contribution for a different contact & we are using a module to do that for front end

Yes there has been - i will leave it to john or eileen to update but their input may be a week or so away due to deadlines

Hello. I think this is directed first to Eileen McNaughton, John Derry, and perhaps Karin G. Others are of course invited to join in.

We are just now testing CiviCRM for a magazine for which donated subscriptions are an essential source of desperately needed revenue. We have discovered this thread and read through Eileen's blog, code and technical specs, and John's draft of a functional spec.

This is all wonderful - and thanks for making it available.

It is now a year after all of these items were posted. Drupal is now at 7.23 and CiviCRM is at 4.3.5.

Where does this functionality stand in terms of being brought into CiviCRM core? If it is not there, or will not be there soon, is the code you have posted, Eileen, still the most recent?

As a newcomer to CiviCRM, I am very reluctant to start modifying CiviCRM.

I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Hi,

The biggest challenge on the gift membership is to get the information you want about the recipient. The honor contact details currently collected don't include address details. The module does work around this by over-riding the tpl & using a profile to collect the data. However tpl over-rides are not at all upgrade proof & it would need to updated for a more recent version. I did look at fixing core up so that it would support a profile for the honor contact and it was a relatively small job - it probably would have been half a days work at that point & would probably be a bit more than that now. However, I didn't have funding or energy to do that and now we are on the cusp of code-freeze for 4.4.

Apart from that I have tested the gift membership module on 4.2 & I had to apply a small patch (hack) to core to prevent some bad behaviour but it mostly worked. It's not quite 'out-of-the-box-done-and-dusted'

A lot of new features have been added to https://www.drupal.org/project/webform_civicrm since we built gift functionality.

If we were starting such a project now from scratch I would test out using CiviCRM Webform module without hacking CiviCRM. I see on the video that it has been built for gift membership use cases.

However, I haven't yet tested this approach myself. I can't say for sure if it would work without any additional code.
