It looks like there is a misconfiguration in your Drupal install or, more likely, your server configuration. I am not able to determine what it is however.

The only other suggestion I could make is to try with a fresh install of Drupal--you mentioned yours was updated.

But if that fails, I am out of ideas. :(

It was a quasi-fresh install of drupal, meaning that I had been running d7.7 and I just replaced the entire directory structure with d7.8, then added back modules and themes I needed from the d.7 install. I did not dump the database however, though I fail to see how that would affect CiviCRM's behavior.

So, what makes you believe that there is a problem with the configuration of either the server or Drupal. Especially when someone else has reported the exact same errors/problems with his install? Also, I asked this question before and never received an answer: Upon initial installation CiviCRM creates an entire file structure in sites/default/files that is owned by the server. is that normal behavior?

Because thousands of other installs worked just fine.

I believe this is a function of your Apache setup actually, so it depends.

If a fresh Drupal 7.8 install in your root works fine, but then the CiviCRM install fails, I would suggest you make a new thread with those details and hopefully fresh eyes will review that.

Thank you. I did not doubt that CiviCRM is working with D7, I was trying to determine what exactly pointed you to a server or Drupal configuration problem. No matter, here is what I have been able to do today:

#1) I installed D7.8 locally (xampp) and imported in the drupal DB. Worked fine, of course.
#2) I installed CiviCRM fresh, received no errors and was able to access the configuration page.
#3) I still cannot see the CiviCRM menus but believe that is a known issue (true?)
#4) I can now add users without getting that Path error message as before.

From this I conclude that CiviCRM is properly installed locally (not withstanding the lack of menus) and that in fact the likely issue is indeed server settings at the ISP. Would you agree? If so, I will open a support ticket with them and if I need to post any further on this forum I will open a new thread (per your request).

thanks for your help.

No, they work fine for all sites I install CiviCRM on.

Yes, I would agree.

<<No, they work fine for all sites I install CiviCRM on.>>

Now i have them: I had to go into Configuration>Site Preferences and once i saved them voila, the menus appeared.
