Developers wishing to participate in "Make it Happen"
January 16, 2012, 08:19:20 am
Hi!

Ryan here from wegewerk.

There is an on again / off again discussion between German-speaking folks over at socialbar.de/talking-civicrm discussing features that would make CiviCRM more competitive in the German / European market.  There has been wish there to define some of the improvements and make them official "Make it Happen" projects to benefit from the scale of the wider community.  What is the process for users to submit official make it happen projects, and for developers / firms to enroll themselves to implement them (?!)  There is definitely interest from both sides.

Thanks!

xavier

Hi,

The "make it happen" is mostly about funding the development, not so much about coordinating coding participation.

If you want to have a successful mih, the normal step is:
1) post in the forum to discuss the feature and get the core respond with a quote (how many hours)
2 optional) post a blog post to get more people or feed back aware of the project
3) start a mih
You'll probably need to have one or a few seed funder, that can cover between 20 and 50% of the total.

If this is about contributing code, you can as well discuss it in the forum and on IRC to get some guidance and feed back. There is a code sprint in London in februrary where some could attend, or we could organise one in germany (I'd be happy to come)

I have a slightly different take on this than xavier :)

In the past we've had 2 MIH's which other developers have taken responsibility for: a Membership MIH and the CiviAccounts MIH

Both the MIH's were done by the developer whose client was a significant funder of the MIH. However going forward, I do envision an ecosystem where different developer shops can participate in the development of various MIH's. It would definitely help if the developers have a client or two that they use to build a well defined spec and help with QA etc. There are a few issues we need to address / resolve as we go down this path, but CiviAccount is a good test case and we'll make progress using that as an example

In your specific case if there are things that your org would be interested in coordinating, raising a MIH and then implementing it, we'd be happy to work with you and start another experiment :) Xavier's first 3 points still do apply in all cases
