Thanks  lot for the hint.
I'll see with the users if they can understand and use that kind of trick on a daily basis or if I need to create a set of smartgroups for them.
And I do understand the inherent limitations of Open Source : it mostly advances on an 'itch to scratch' basis, and this often means more work gets done on the underlying engine and the features set than the user interface and usability. And overall, CiviCRM is pretty useable
