Just posting my info here in case it helps someone.

"The wiki does say you can upgrade from 2.2.x to 4.1.1 "
I read that too and assumed it to be true but it is very far from true it seems.

I tried to upgrade from 2.2.9 to 4.1.x, 4.0.x, 3.4.x, 3.2.x, 3.1.x and none worked.

I had to go 2.2.9 > 3.0.4 > 3.4.8 > 4.1.6

I also tried shortcutting from 3.0.4 to 4.1.6 and it also didn't work.

Remember to back up your database after each upgrade.
