Thanks Erik.

kenahoo - I'm not a techie!  Could you go on IRC to discuss it do you think if you're having the same issue?  There is no rhyme or reason to it, as some of the people it multiplies have more than one Drupal account and others don't.

OK - we seem to have discovered the cause and solution of this. It was creating a new 'me' (with my email address as my contact name) each time I was logging in.  Civi was also doing this for several other people.  We discovered a common feature - we all had more than one Drupal account so resolved the problem by keeping only the Drupal account which had an Assigned Domain.  For the others we:

- Chose Cancel the selected user accounts in the Drupal people dropdown
- Selected Delete the account and make its content belong to the Anonymous user on the next screen and also selected Do not report under Report as Inappropriate
- Ensured that the Civi contact record for the relevant person included the email address of the relevant Drupal account
- Went to Administer - Users & Permissions and chose to Synchronise Users to Contacts
- Checked that the person's contact record had been assigned the User ID number which corresponded to the residual Drupal account
- Deleted all the multiple records that had been created previously with email addresses as the contact name

Since doing this there have been no duplicates created of my own record.  Hope this helps kenahoo.

Yes, glad a solution was found, but it does seem more like a workaround than a finding of root cause.  Does it suggest at all what might be going wrong in the CiviCRM code?

I am not sure if the CiviCRM code was the culprit? From what I gather the issue is if you have more Drupal accounts, probably with the same emailaddress. Is that a desirable situation? If we need to do something about it, are we to 'correct' Drupal in CiviCRM or is it a problem in CiviCRM doing something wrong with that set-up?

I know it's been awhile but this is happening to me with a new WordPress CiviCRM install. I've started a new thread over http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,27571.0 and wanted to leave a trail for those that might also be encountering this problem. It seems to still exist but perhaps in a different form now.

I too am getting the same issue, ie. extraneous contacts are being created. This means that the Home Dashboard in effect disappears on each log in as the system has been logged in as a new contact.

I noticed this behaviour when I upgraded  4.0.8 to 4.1.6 on a test site running with Joomla 2.5.7. There is only one user in the Joomla User table with the email address being replicated - it is actually a Super User. This is going to prevent me from upgrading our live site as the Home Dashboard is very important to the users with back-end access.

Any ideas on this would be gratefully received. By the way I also continued with the upgrade to 4.2. and the same symptoms were displayed - I then rolled back to 4.1.6.

Are you running a multi-site installation?  We had something similar happening with our multisite installation when some people had managed to get a different civi account on each domain.

can you help debug this issue and figure out what is happening and why. I've given some tips on the relevant files here:
