Yeap, your initial question has been slightly sidetracked by the social civi nitpickers gang ;)

In a nutshell, take hershel code (with api) and wrap it with colemanw to store the name in the session instead of running it on every page.

That, and all we need is love, love (and warm beer & flat coffee).
