There is an interesting post here about a file called settings_location.php which can be used for Multisite setups.

Hershel-

Finally added this write up.
I just had to go through the process again so I documented it.

If you have suggestions for how to do a better job, please send them along.  I'd like to fully understand the norms.  I also realize that my strategies are far less technical than most of the write-ups.  I try to avoid the command line if possible. :)  Not sure if that's a problem.
