Well the 3 solutions I can think of are:
  • Improve CiviCRM to autofill participant data
  • Change the custom fields to be contact fields instead of participant
  • Link to a contribution form instead of the participant form for payment. Then update the participant to note payment manually or via a hook.

Do you know what files would need to be updated in Civi to make this possible? Anyone willing to make this improvement in Civi??

I honestly don't know whether the improvement would take 1 hour or 10. Lobo might have a better guess.
Do you have any funds for sponsoring this work?

I guess it would depend on how much the development would cost. Possibly I could get funds.

I dont know if its a bug or a missing feature? Did u check and see if contact custom fields work?

If i had to take a wild random guess, i suspect its 3-5 hours (if a bug) or 10-20 hours (if a missing feature)

Could hook_civicrm_buildForm be of help here? i.e. when it fires for the form in question, retrieve the custom data based on the contact and event, and populate the empty custom fields?

I also found a bug within this process as well. We have a custom field on the participant that is an upload link and the field is required. When they go back to confirm and finish their registration they have to upload their product list again. Then when they click submit it gives an error saying that the field is required and to upload a file, even though the file has already been upload. Ugh! How much per hour to get this fixed? We are a non-profit with very little funding:(
