We've just identified a very similar problem. We used the "Do not trade" field in privacy settings to signify that a contact did not want to be included in a smart group of members. We included this field in a profile entitled "My Profile" that individual users are encouraged to edit in order to keep their records up to date. Whenever a user brings up the profile to view it and saves it without setting this field, it reverts to a value of "NULL" despite having been set initially to "0".

So far, the only way around this that I can think of is to create a cron job that resets all NULL values to "0". I'm not sure if this is how the code was designed to work or should be considered a "bug". We included the field in the criteria for a smart group so the initial problem that we saw was a varying count of members for no apparent reason.
