Permission for "User ID" link on contact page
June 11, 2012, 10:25:49 am
Hi all,

I'm sure this is simple, but I can't find it.

I love the User ID link that shows up on the Civicrm contact page (and links to the user's Drupal user page).  However, I just realized that only my administrators have access to this ID link.

I've tried changing the permissions in Drupal, giving each user the same permission that the administrators have, but none of them seem to do the trick.  Is there another permissions screen that I'm missing?

I would just like to turn on this function for one more set of users.

Thanks in advance,
-tiffani

In 4.1 'Administer users' permission is required.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply.  I had not tried anything out of the CiviCRM permission set (although I tried everything in the Civi permission set).  And that, with some tweaking, did the trick.

It's finally working and it seems that:

CiviCRM permission: Administer CiviCRM
User permission: Administer Users

Are the two necessary (and, on their own insufficient) permissions required to get this link to appear.

Thanks again,
-tiffani

have you thoroughly tested that you aren't giving people access to records they shouldn't be seeing?

Thanks for the double-check.

In truth, it gives my mid-level users a bit more access than I'd like (not to info, actually... but to adminstrative functionality that I'd rather they not mess with).

In the end, I find that they don't mess around too much -- so giving them better access to info is worth the trade off.  These users are teachers, so we do trust and train all of them.

Our primary users (the students) don't have access to the CiviCRM data at all.   Then, we'd have serious concerns.

For general reference: we use and love colemanw's CiviCRM/Webform Integration module and that allows us to push a lot of the student's activities to places in CiviCRM where teachers can monitor them.  But, some Drupal functions (tracking page visits, and tracking quizzes) require finding these students in Drupal - which is where that link is really helpful.

I'm creeping towards finding ways to bring all of this information together (with very slow progress).  If people have suggestions, I'm wide open.

And, if anyone else uses this link to get to users, it might be worth thinking about a finer grained permission.  That's also beyond my abilities at the moment.

Thanks all. -tiffani

Version 3 of Webform CiviCRM Integration incorporates some search functionality into webforms (selecting a contact via autocomplete will  ajax-load that contact and fill out the form with their details). Also, you could probably do a lot with views to display relevant info to teachers or students.
Try asking your question on the new CiviCRM help site.
