I've come a bit further now.. still not sure how to fix this. This URL works and gets me to the form:

/wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/contact/view/case&edit&snippet=4&cgcount=1&action=update&reset=1&type=Case&entityID=2&groupID=1&cid=2&subType=1

Notice the difference with the URL the edit button gives though:

/wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/case/cd/edit&snippet=4&cgcount=1&action=update&reset=1&type=Case&entityID=2&groupID=1&cid=2&subType=1

It seems somehow what is supposed to be an & is written as /cd/

Hmm - have you tried rebuilding the menu? Put this URL in your browser:

/wp-admin/admin.php?page=CiviCRM&q=civicrm/menu/rebuild&reset=1

Hi David,

We tried a lot of things, we just could not get it to work. So we switched to Drupal instead, works fine now. We're still mystified as to what caused the Wordpress glitch.

Maybe double-check the permissions on those files to be sure they can be read by the Apache user?  If that's no use, I'd definitely check the Apache logs next.

I can confirm I'm still seeing this bug in Civi 4.5.3 with Wordpress 4.1.  I added a custom field of type Alphanumeric/Checkbox, and then all sorts of activities involving that custom field (not least was adding/editing the contact) resulted in a 404 error for pages that work fine when the custom field is disabled (doesn't need to be deleted).

I could still use inline editing so long as I didn't make a call to the custom field.  Note that this is on a shared host (A2 Hosting) who probably has all sorts of mod_security or the equivalent which I'm not aware of.
