I'm seeing similar problems trying to upgrade form 4.1.5 to 4.2. Looks like the 4.2 upgrade script is somewhat different form what we are used to with previous upgrades, and it certainly seems to be leading to confusion and errors. I was totally thrown when it started referring to 4.2 alpha and beta versions, when I'm using the 4.2. stable release. And it's getting stuck at the alpha1 point in the upgrade process. Skipping this looks to get you through the upgrade, but leaves you with an unworkable installation.
