How do I do that? 

OK.  So the detailed error is:

detailed error: The character encoding of the HTML document was not declared. The document will render with garbled text in some browser configurations if the document contains characters from outside the US-ASCII range. The character encoding of the page must to be declared in the document or in the transfer protocol.

It would seem that CiviCRM should be "declaring" the character encoding of my HTML documents, correct?  If it is not doing so, and it should be doing so, the next question is, is this phenomenon limited to my site only?  And if so, why?

Ok, I think I got it.  I have this token in my email content: {$smarty.now|date_format}

It turns out that formatting this token as shown below, causes the issue I have been describing.  The solution, do not format this token, and format everything else, and the mail is sent just fine!!

<p><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino; font-size: small;">{$smarty.now|date_format}</span></p>

That is an acceptable work-around for me for now, but what a headache this has given me.  Thank you for your help with this Hershel and everyone else.

i would check your apache/php error logs (check with your host to see where it is) to find the reason behind the white screen. seems like php fatally exited due to some issue
