Do take a look at http://civicrm.org/blogs/lindseym/new-features-extension-civi-groups as we have developed an extension which shows the number of people in groups by hierarchy in a Drupal view. If you're not already parenting groups you could parent the groups you need the info on so that they would appear at the same point in the view.

Also I don't know if this forum post is of any use - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,23656.msg99423.html#msg99423  It's possible to create extra group 'types' via Administer-System Settings-Option Groups and then choose Group Type. If you assign the groups in question as a particular type of group (eg Management Admin) you can then filter your Manage Groups screen to show only those groups and their numbers via Dave G's suggestion.
