i ran this test when i was doing some client work. did not bother to benchmark closely on a clean environment. but the difference in both time and memory consumption was quite significant.

this is definitely important when u r running multiple jobs in parallel and trying to maximize thruput. If u r sending < 10K (or 100K emails), i suspect its not as important
