Tony - Yes, you must be logged in to renew a membership. That's how we know "who you are" and what (if any) membership you currently have. Membership Signup / Renewal enabled online contribution pages behave differently when a logged in user who has a membership navigates to them:

1. They show the user info about their existing membership and status to the right of the membership type radio button - "Your General membership expires on March 30, 2008"

2. They swap the Membership Signup title and intro text for Membership Renewal values (as you've configured these in the Membership Block for that contribution page).
